Background

Born in Vault 13 in the late 2120’s, John Connell grew up to become a water filtration systems technician in Vault 13.  He was in his early thirties when the Water Purification Chip had broken and being one of the few people in Vault 13 that was intimately knowledgeable of the functions of water filtration was sent out by Overseer Jacoren to find a replacement, though he would jokingly write in his memoirs that he had been unfortunate enough to have been sent out after drawing the short straw.

The first place he searched for a replacement water chip was the nearby Vault 15, which he would learn during his travels had been attacked by raiders by one of the Vault’s former inhabitants that he had met in the settlement known as Shady Sands that he had passed through, where he had met the two people that would found the New Californian Republic, Aradesh and Tandi, and a caravan guard that was recuperating from wounds he had taken from a raider attack called Ian that he convinced to accompany him in his search for a water chip.  After failing to find a replacement water chip in Vault 15, John Connell’s search would take him south, to settlements like Junktown, the Hub and Adytum, where he would find himself involved in numerous adventures, each decision helping shape the future of the wasteland, meeting all sorts of people, including a Desert Ranger from Nevada called Tycho and a dog called Dogmeat that would accompany him, and negotiate the Water Merchants in the Hub to supply Vault 13 with a shipment of water to extend the amount to time John Connell needed to find the replacement water chip, a decision that John would later be informed was a potentially threatening one for the people of Vault 13.

Many weeks had passed before he had heard that the settlement of Necropolis, populated by the decrepit, rotting post-humanoids commonly known as ghouls, possessed a water chip.  It was also there that John Connell and his companions first encountered the super mutants, genetically mutated muscle-bound humanoids nearly twice the size of a man and incredibly resilient that were terrorising the local ghoul population.  After eliminating the super mutants and burying Ian who had been killed by one of the super mutants and fixing the water pump that supplied Necropolis with fresh water without the need for a water chip for the ghouls, John Connell left Necropolis with the water chip in his possession, his mission accomplished.

Despite returning successfully back to Vault 13, Jacoren would shortly afterwards send him back out again with another mission, fearing that the super mutants would discover the location of Vault 13 thanks to John Connell pointing out their location to the Water Merchants, sending John out to the wasteland once more to eliminate the super mutant threat, allying with both the secretive Brotherhood of Steel and the benevolent Followers of the Apocalypse that aided him in his mission to eliminate the super mutants at the Mariposa Military Base and their allies, the Children of the Cathedral, where the leader of the super mutant army that threatened Vault 13 and the rest of the wasteland, a mutated brain known only as the Master made its lair deep underneath a cathedral, triggering a nuclear device that obliterated the cathedral after John killed the Master.

After surviving his ordeal in eliminating the super mutant threat to Vault 13, John returned home, where instead of receiving a hero’s welcome was ordered to leave by Jacoren and never to return, fearing that their fellow vault dwellers would want to leave Vault 13.  Saddened by his exile, John travelled north to Oregon, accompanied by some of his fellow vault dwellers that accompanied him in his exile, establishing the community that would be known as Arroyo, where he settled down and had a family that would play a role in shaping the future of the New Californian Republic in the 23rd century.
